About SecurMed
Incorporated in 2016, SecurMed is the not-for-profit company set up to establish the UK Medicines Verification System (UK MVS) as required under the Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016/161 of the EU Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD).
In January 2021, at the end of the Brexit transition period, the Delegated Regulation was no longer applicable in Great Britain, but remains in force in Northern Ireland. The UK MVS became the UKNI MVS.
FMD introduced the requirement for the packaging of all prescription-only medicines to carry additional safety features in the form of;
- an anti-tamper device on the packaging
- additional human-readable information
- a special machine readable 2D matrix containing unique information about the medicine pack.
The data encoded into the 2D matrix is uploaded into a central European system and distributed to the UKNI market to enable Community Pharmacies, Hospitals, GPs, Health Centres and Wholesalers to verify that supplied medicine packs are genuine, before dispensing to patients.
Details of UKNI market medicine packs are stored within the UKNI MVS, together with all legacy UK packs uploaded before 31st December 2020.
