Certificate Error in Google Chrome Browser
Intended Audience
End Users, Help Desk and Software Suppliers
Situation
Using the Google Chrome browser, on selecting the Certificate to access the UKNI MVS an error is displayed:
ERR_SSL_CLIENT_AUTH_CERT_NO_PRIVATE_KEY
Background
Access to the UKNI MVS requires a Valid certificate, a Username and a Password:
- The Certificate must be correctly installed on the Local Machine
- The Certificate must be selected to access the UKNI MVS, which should then display the Login screen.
In this error situation, the user receives the message ERR_SSL_CLIENT_AUTH_CERT_NO_PRIVATE_KEY and the Login screen is not displayed.
Failures
The following causes have been identified:
- An incorrect Single Socket Layer (SSL) state is identified by Chrome. This prevents the use of the Certificate
- Transport Layer Security (TLS) on the PC is not set to TLS version 1.2. This is more likely to occur on older PCs running older operating systems.
Recommendations
In the Google Chrome browser perform the following actions:
- Open Chrome Settings
- Show Advanced Settings
- Under System Section, Open Proxy Settings
- Select Content tab
- Check Certificates to ensure Certificate is present and installed correctly
- Click Clear SSL State
- Reboot Windows
- Attempt MVS login again
Note: Step 6 & 7 may need to be performed more than once
If steps 1-8 were not successful, on the PC perform the following actions: - Open Control Panel
- Under Network and Internet Section, Select Internet Options
- Select Advanced Tab
- Scroll down to find the following and select each entry:
- Use SSL 3.0
- Use TLS 1.0
- Use TLS 1.1
- Use TLS 1.2
When complete, attempt the login process again.
